The Scholarship Fund

TRAMA is an invaluable resource for its 400 members. Members are able to work collaboratively and supportively with other women to further develop our skills and receive fair compensation for our products in a world market. The self-determined wages that TRAMA members earn make a vital difference in the lives of our families. Unfortunately due to the economic realities of rural Guatemalan life, members are frequently unable to provide for more than subsistence for our families.

The Guatemalan government does fund some free schools for children, but once their registration numbers are filled, they turn away all other children interested in attending school. The only other option to receive an education is a private school, with tuitions of around $100 Quetzales a month, which is simply out of the reach of the majority of TRAMA members. As of March, 2009, we estimate that there are 275 children of TRAMA members who are unable to access any form of schooling.

TRAMA leadership recognizes both the importance of education for any person’s future wellbeing and the natural desire of all children to learn. To help address the lack of access among our communities, we have started a scholarship fund that will pay the school fees for members’ children. The fund is built through donations from around the world and it is managed by the TRAMA administrative team (separate from TRAMAs main organizational funds). While, of course, our goal is to send every TRAMA child to school, if we fall short of the necessary funds the amount that we do have is fairly allocated to the individual weaving collectives that make up TRAMA’s membership. The collectives are then responsible for determining which children receive funding that year (with a minimum of %50 of scholarships going to girls).
