Mayan Arise Cushion Cover black

Mayan Arise Cushion Cover black

$45.00

This bright cushion cover has a design including a farmer, the Quetzal bird and a corn plant. The Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala and one of the most important symbols. The bird is known for flying free through the forest of Alta Verapaz. Legend has it that long ago the Quetzal would sing beautifully, but it has been silent since the Spanish conquest. The red chest is representative of the blood spilled while the Mayan people tried to protect themselves and their land. Mayan mythology tells that for the creation of the human being, white corn was used for the bones, yellow corn for the muscles, black corn for the eyes and hair and red corn for the blood. Corn is not just food in these regions but also a part of the ancestral tradition. The cushion cover comes from Cotzal, Guatemala and is hand made by women of our cooperative.
