Here are some juicy facts on the foot loom weaving technique!
The treadle or foot loom was introduced by the Spanish to Mayan weavers, who used to manufacture their textiles using the ancient backstrap loom of their ancestors.
The foot and backstrap loom types have been coexisting from then on: the two processes are basically the same, the only exception being the mechanism behind the movement of the warp. In the case of the backstrap loom, the threads of the warp are lifted by a heddle rod by hand, while in the case of the treadle loom this happens mechanically by a series of foot pedals.
Besides this fundamental difference, both tools require a large amount of expertise, skill, and time to create the masterpieces you can admire throughout our collections.
Now, you might appreciate even more the incredible work that our weavers are carrying on thanks to their cooperative: TRAMA!
