These gorgeous, versatile pieces can be worn as a scarf or shawl or used as a table runner! Each piece is handcrafted on a traditional footloom by one of the 400 women of our weaving cooperative. Footloom weaving is a different weaving technique than backstrap loom weaving. It requires a different method including the feet in the weaving process. It is easier to make detailed patterns on the footloom.
This design comes from the Sacatepéquez region. The central pattern represents the peaks of the Guatemalan volcanoes with plumes of smoke rising skyward. Bordering the volcanoes is a row of spring flowers and wreaths to respectfully mourn the dead. Finally, on the outer edges are curving lines representing the winding rivers of Guatemala – Quite the conversation starter!
