My journey at Trama Textiles
Ciao! My name is Elisabetta, and I’m an Architect from Italy. I’ve just concluded a two-month volunteering experience at Trama Textiles in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Together with afriend of mine, we discovered this opportunity through WorkAway, and it immediately resonated with us. Given our background in the humanitarian sector and our shared passion for crochet and textile art, it felt like the perfect fit!
I had the privilege of immersing myself in the daily life of the cooperative. At the heart of Trama Textiles are the two remarkable women, Dona Amparo and Dona Oralia, whose vision and strength drive the cooperative forward. Alongside them is Maria, the volunteer coordinator, who expertly manages the operations while fostering a collaborative environment where ideas and suggestions from volunteers are always welcome and truly appreciated.
Trama Textiles is an organization full of potential, and the work is as diverse as it is meaningful. One of the most exciting aspects of my time there was the opportunity to contribute to various initiatives: from fundraising and supporting artisans, to managing the online and physical store, and helping organize events that promote Guatemalan textile traditions, as Trama is deeply embedded in the social and cultural life of Quetzaltenango.
I also had the chance to work alongside an amazing team of international volunteers, many of whom became close friends over the course of my stay, making the experience even more enriching. Additionally, the city itself is a wonderful place to be based, offering access to a rich array of natural beauty and cultural sites, which made my time in Guatemala even more special.
All in all, this experience has been a profoundly rewarding chapter in my life, one that has left an indelible mark on both my personal and professional growth. I am excited to continue supporting Trama Textiles in any way I can moving forward. I would like to express my gratitude to Oralia and Amparo, whose warmth and generosity made me feel like a member of their family, and to Maria, whose exceptional support and attentiveness before, during, and after my stay ensured that my experience was smooth and fulfilling.
