Qu'est-ce que le Quetzal ? L'oiseau national du Guatemala
Adoré par les Mayas et les Aztèques, le Quetzal est le symbole du Guatemala. Ce symbolisme n'est pas accidentel : la tradition locale le considère comme un symbole de liberté car on croyait qu'il préférait mourir de faim plutôt que de vivre en captivité.
Le quetzal resplendissant est un oiseau bien nommé que beaucoup considèrent comme l'un des plus beaux du monde. Ces animaux aux couleurs vives vivent dans les forêts tropicales montagneuses d'Amérique centrale où ils mangent des fruits, des insectes, des lézards et d'autres petites créatures.
Les couleurs du Quetzal
Les quetzals brillants ont un corps vert (présentant une iridescence allant du vert-doré au bleu-violet) et une poitrine rouge. Selon la lumière, les plumes de quetzal peuvent briller dans une variation de couleurs : du vert au cobalt, au vert lime, du jaune au bleu outremer. Le mâle a une crête en forme de casque. Leurs plumes irisées, qui les font paraître brillants et verts comme les feuilles des arbres, sont une adaptation de camouflage pour se cacher dans la forêt par temps de pluie.
Pendant la saison des amours, les quetzals mâles développent des plumes caudales jumelles qui forment une traîne étonnante allant jusqu'à un mètre de long. Les femelles n'ont pas de longues traînes, mais elles partagent les couleurs brillantes bleues, vertes et rouges de leurs partenaires. Dans tous les cas, les couleurs des mâles ont tendance à être plus vives car elles sont utilisées pour attirer les femelles pendant la période de reproduction.
Pourquoi le Quetzal symbolise la liberté
Le Quetzal ou, comme on l'appelle aussi, le Trogon splendide, a été pris comme symbole de liberté depuis l'époque maya en raison d'une croyance populaire selon laquelle il se laisserait mourir de faim plutôt que de vivre en captivité.
Les belles plumes vertes du Quetzal étaient utilisées par les anciens Mayas pour confectionner des diadèmes que seules les personnes les plus importantes avaient le privilège de porter sur leur tête. Ces plumes étaient considérées si précieuses qu'elles étaient même utilisées comme monnaie d'échange.
Le Quetzal dans les traditions mayas
Pendant de nombreux siècles, le Quetzal a joué un rôle très important parmi les peuples indigènes d'Amérique centrale, et était associé au dieu du vent Quetzalcoatl. Les longues plumes vertes de la queue étaient considérées par les indigènes comme une caractéristique dérivée des reptiles et le Quetzal représentait donc une sorte de lien entre un oiseau et un serpent et, par conséquent, une sorte de lien entre le ciel et la terre. Dans de nombreuses langues mayas, pour cette raison, le terme quetzal a également pris le sens de « sacré » ou « consacré par les dieux ».
Le Quetzal dans les légendes mayas
Selon une légende maya, le prince guerrier Tecún Umán, dernier souverain des Mayas Quiché pendant la conquête espagnole, avait l'un de ces oiseaux comme guide spirituel. La légende raconte qu'à sa mort, l'oiseau a plongé et s'est posé sur son corps ensanglanté, le laissant avec des plumes rouges distinctives sur la poitrine.
Une autre légende raconte que le quetzal chantait magnifiquement avant la conquête espagnole, mais qu'il est resté silencieux depuis ; il ne chantera à nouveau que lorsque la terre sera vraiment libre.
Le Quetzal dans l'identité guatémaltèque aujourd'hui
Pendant les luttes contre les Espagnols, le quetzal est devenu un symbole de liberté et d'indépendance, et il conserve toujours cette signification officielle au Guatemala, où il apparaît sur le drapeau et sur les timbres-poste. Parce que dans l'ancienne culture maya, les plumes caudales du quetzal étaient utilisées comme monnaie, et l'oiseau a toujours eu une valeur très importante pour tous les Guatémaltèques, ils ont choisi cette dénomination pour la monnaie nationale. Le quetzal (code GTQ) est l'unité monétaire du Guatemala depuis 1925. L'oiseau sacré est également représenté sur l'écusson du drapeau guatémaltèque.
Cette dévotion à la liberté est également évoquée dans l'hymne national guatémaltèque, qui contient les paroles « antes muerto que esclavo sera » (« plutôt la mort que l'esclavage ») en référence à l'oiseau.
Notre ville bien-aimée, que les habitants aiment appeler communément par son ancien nom Xela, est aussi officiellement nommée Quetzaltenango, signifiant « ville du Quetzal » en nahuatl.
Le Quetzal dans les textiles et les huipiles mayas
Le quetzal est également l'un des symboles textiles les plus importants. Les huipiles, les blouses traditionnelles et autres vêtements de la tradition textile maya, sont souvent décorés de représentations de ces oiseaux sacrés, naturellement teints dans des couleurs vives et joyeuses, tout comme les vrais, comme un vœu de liberté et de bonne chance.
