Almaya Fund

Weaving Opportunities, Shaping Futures

A reality that can't be ignored

In Guatemala, over half of the population lives below the poverty line, a reality that disproportionately affects rural and indigenous communities. For many Maya women weavers, access to education was never a possibility; in fact, more than half of the women in our cooperative never had the opportunity to attend school, as learning opportunities for women have historically been limited.

Although primary education is free, continuing into secondary school comes at a cost around —Q2500 ($325 USD) per year— making it unaffordable for many families, especially in rural and indigenous communities. This financial barrier forces nearly half of all children to drop out after primary school, cutting short their educational journey and future possibilities.

In response to this reality, the women of our cooperative came together to create Almaya, meaning “Maya Soul.” In Maya worldview, the soul represents the vital breath, consciousness, and a deep connection with the universe.

What is the Almaya Fund?

Community-led, purpose-driven

Almaya supports the education of the children of Maya women weavers—a need identified by the women themselves.

As a community-led initiative, Almaya is guided by those closest to the reality it seeks to change, ensuring that support reaches the children and families who need it most.

By supporting Almaya, you are not only contributing to education, but becoming part of a collective effort to create lasting opportunities for future generations.

How we make it possible?

CH’UMIL Scholarships

One of the key ways we make this possible is through the CH’UMIL Scholarships, named after the Mayan word for “star,” symbolizing guidance, hope, and aspiration.

Through this program, children receive the support they need to continue their education and build a brighter future. From covering school fees to providing essential supplies, these scholarships help remove the barriers that often prevent children from staying in school.

Every contribution, no matter the amount, helps a child stay in school, continue learning, and access new opportunities.

Why your support matters?

As of April 2026, thanks to the generosity of our donors, we have been able to support 8 students through the CH’UMIL Scholarships.

Each of these students represents a story, a family, and a future that is being transformed through access to education.

With your help, we can continue growing this number one child at a time. There are many more children ready to continue their education, just waiting for the support to do. Our goal is to expand this impact in the coming months, reaching more children who need the opportunity to stay in school.

Your generosity also provides stability and continuity for the women and families behind every handmade textile, strengthening livelihoods and preserving traditions.

By supporting Almaya, you help ensure that a child stays in school and that their future remains within reach.
