THE ART OF FOOT LOOM WEAVING

The treadle (foot) loom was introduced by the Spanish to the Maya weavers, who traditionally worked with backstrap looms. Today, both techniques coexist, with foot loom weaving allowing for greater production efficiency while preserving Maya textile artistry.

Unlike backstrap looms, where threads are lifted by hand, the foot loom operates through a pedal system, making it mechanically efficient yet equally intricate.
