Weaving School
Our weaving school offers you the rare opportunity to learn the ancient art of backstrap loom weaving from our expert women weavers.
You can choose what to make from a selection of options, including a simple sample piece, a scarf, or a complex embroidered table runner. You can also choose the pattern and colours you will use in your design, and when you finish, you get to take home whatever you make – a unique souvenir of your time in Guatemala.
During your time at Trama’s weaving school, you will learn how to select the best materials, prepare the thread and weave using a traditional backstrap loom. You will also have the opportunity to find out more about different weaving processes, the history of Maya weaving, and the rich culture of textiles in Guatemala. Each class is taught one-to-one to make sure you get all the support you need to create a beautiful piece.
Classes run from Monday to Friday, from 9am–6pm. You can start your classes on any day of the week, at any time of day. Just drop by the Trama office and we’ll sign you up in person, or send us an email at coordinator@tramatextiles.org.
