Weaving Classes

At the Trama office in Xela, you have the unique opportunity to learn the ancient art of backstrap loom weaving from our expert women weavers.

During your time at Trama, you will learn

  • how to prepare the warp
  • set up the loom
  • weave using the traditional backstrap loom.

Each class is taught one-to-one to make sure you get all the support you need to create your own beautiful and individual piece.
You can choose what to make from a selection of options, including a simple sample piece, a scarf, or a complex embroidered table runner. You can also choose the pattern and colors you will use in your design, and when you finish, you get to take home a unique souvenir of your time in Guatemala.

Our weaving masters Amparo and Oralia love to answer your questions and talk about different weaving processes, the history of Maya weaving, and the rich culture of textiles in Guatemala.
