Being a Volunteer at Trama Textiles
Volunteering at Trama Textiles offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Guatemala while supporting a meaningful cause. Our volunteers play an essential role in the daily operations of Trama Textiles, where they help manage both our physical and online stores, assist in organizing events, and capture beautiful memories of their time with us.
We use platforms such as Workaway, Worldpackers, Instagram, and our website to connect with volunteers from all around the world. Volunteers typically stay with us for one month, during which they learn about the history and work of Trama Textiles through a comprehensive form that I send them before their arrival. The volunteers’ time is spent in our office, not in the community, though we occasionally visit local communities for specific needs like taking photos.
At Trama Textiles, volunteers are integral in supporting the day-to-day activities of the association. They help us by taking photos, running our stores, both physical and online, and assisting in organizing fundraising events to support our indigenous women. It’s a dynamic and rewarding experience, as volunteers get hands-on involvement with the operations and outreach efforts of the association.
One of the most enriching parts of volunteering at Trama is the chance to connect with our weavers, Oralia and Amparo. These two women are central to the culture and craft at Trama Textiles. Volunteers often learn weaving techniques directly from Oralia and Amparo, gaining a deeper understanding of Guatemala’s weaving traditions and the significance behind each piece. Volunteers and students from various backgrounds, including Americans with Guatemalan heritage, often share this experience together, learning from each other as they engage in the art of weaving.
During their stay, volunteers also create an album of memories, which serves as a personal collection of moments shared with other volunteers, as well as with the weavers and their families. This keepsake becomes a cherished memento of their time in Xela, where they not only contribute to Trama Textiles but also gain a broader perspective on the rich culture of Guatemala.
Amparo, Oralia, and María personally ensure that each volunteer feels welcomed and supported during their stay. We take pride in sharing our stories and weaving knowledge, providing volunteers with a meaningful cultural experience that goes beyond just volunteering. For those looking for a volunteer opportunity that is both rewarding and culturally enriching, Trama Textiles offers a chance to connect with a community of like-minded individuals while contributing to the empowerment of indigenous women. It’s a chance to tie the threads of your own life to the legacy of the Maya people while helping us continue our mission of preserving Guatemalan weaving traditions.
